Kaliabor College | Commitment to Barrier-Free Education

1. Institutional Policy & Commitment

Kaliabor College is strictly committed to creating a “Barrier-Free Environment” that allows students, staff, and visitors with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of campus life. In accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 and the UGC Accessibility Guidelines (2022), the College strives to ensure equitable access to quality education, infrastructure, and digital resources.

Our policy is guided by the principles of Universal Design, ensuring that our physical and digital campuses remain accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.

2. Physical Infrastructure (Built Environment)

  • Ramps & Rails: All major academic blocks, administrative buildings and library entrances are equipped with ramps having anti-skid surfaces and handrails.
  • Accessible Washrooms: Specially designed washrooms with grab bars and wider doors are available on the ground floors of key buildings.
  • Wheelchair Availability: Wheelchairs are available at the main security gate and administrative block for students and visitors.
  • Signage: High-contrast and tactile signage is progressively being installed to guide visually impaired learners to important locations.

3. Academic & Examination Support

  • Scribe Facility: Students with benchmark disabilities are provided scribes as per government and university norms.
  • Compensatory Time: Eligible students receive an additional 30 minutes during examinations.
  • Accessible Classrooms: Ground-floor classrooms are prioritized for students with locomotor disabilities.
  • Assistive Technology: The Central Library is being upgraded with screen readers (JAWS/NVDA) and high-contrast computer systems.

4. Digital Accessibility (Website & ICT)

The College website complies with the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) , ensuring accessibility for all users.

  • Screen Reader Compatibility: Works with NVDA, JAWS, and other major readers.
  • Resizable Text: Users can adjust font sizes using built-in accessibility tools.

5. Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC)

Kaliabor College maintains an active Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC) to oversee the implementation of accessibility initiatives. The EOC acts as a grievance redressal body and conducts sensitization programmes for faculty, staff, and students.

6. Student Action Plan (For Admission & Examinations)

  1. Declare your disability status during the Online Admission process.
  2. Submit your UDID Card / Disability Certificate (issued by a competent medical authority) to the College Office.
  3. Apply for Scribe / Extra Time at least 15 days before the commencement of examinations through the Examination Branch.
