Sustainability of Local Culture, Tradition and Environment


Kaliabor college is the only higher educational institution in the greater Kaliabor sub- Division. Along with the commitment for providing quality education, it also shoulders the equal responsibility for sustaining the local Culture, Tradition and Environment of the region.

Kaliabor area is a thriving centre of Sattriya culture, the college has initiated a number of measures to support, sustain and propagate Sattriya culture. Over the years, the college has initiated a number of activity to promote the satriya culture (classical religious and cultural fabric of Assam created by MahapurushaSrimantaSankardeva) through publications, performing Satriya Bhowna, Ankiya Naat, Satriya dance. Further, the college provides Add on certificate course on Ankiya Naat (classical drama).

In light of the vision of NEP-20, the college has constituted a Cell for Promotion of Local Language, Art and Culture which has organized Promotion Programme on Ankiya Bhaona Make- Up Art. Further, to harness the local traditional resources, the cell has organized an Exhibition programme for promoting Local Artist on Folk Song along with different handcrafted musical instruments. The cell has set up a Wooden Handloom weaving device for preserving and promoting the traditional handloom practices. Under this set-up, a certificate course (two month duration) on Handloom is also provided by the cell.

Keeping the importance for continuing our indigenous art and culture, the college has organized Kaliburhi dance-an ancient local dance of the region. For the promotion of Indian ancient languages, a lecture entitled 'The Characteristics of the Pali Language and Its Relevance' was organized. In view of promoting our culture and talent, the college has organized an International cultural exchange programme where representative from China and Thailand have participated. In this occasion the college has performed Ankiya Bhawona entitled “Ram Vijay”. From the international cultural team, the Thai dance, Chinese and Thai Music was performed.

To preserve the traditional culture and knowledge and to acquaint the society with our local potentiality, the college maintains a cultural Museum where different cultural and material heritage of the region are collected from scattered locations. The college also published a book entitled “Kaliaboror SilaLipi Tamralipi etyadi” in order to support the local writer and to preserve the ancient script.

In order to conserve the sancipat manuscripts and woodcarving by customized scientific method, the college has organized weeklong Workshops in collaboration with Dept. of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University with experts invited from Tezpur University and the prime seat of Sattriya learning i.e. Majuli in upper Assam.

In order to contribute towards maintaining ecological balance, the college continues to take a series of initiatives. They are-

-The college has a Orchidarium where different orchid species (including endangered) of entire Nagaon district are maintained. A book entitled ‘Orchids of Nagaon’ is also published by the College. Further a guest lecture programme on “Orchid diversity in Assam: an orchid cultivation technique was organized.

-The college maintains a botanical garden where medicinal plants are planted in order to acquaint the students for its medicinal values.

-Different wildlife species are usually seen in the college campus as the college is near to Kaziranga national Park. So, banners are placed in round corner of the campus to aware the college fraternity to protect those species.

- The college extends its voluntary consultancy service for rescuing wild life species whenever required.

- To acquaint the students with practical knowledge, the college preserves the carcass of the endangered species collected from the locality.

- To minimize the Man-Elephant conflict, the college has organized an Academia –environmental activists interface programme in a forest village.

- To aware the students with the impact of climate change, the college has organized a series of state level essay writing competition.

-the college has taken the initiative to set up environment and climate cell. - During the COVID-19 period, the college has started an online campaign for sustaining the environment through plantation programme.

- With a vision of eco-restoration, land and water management, the college has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land management, Assam.

- To understand the local biodiversity, a programme on bird watching and Butterfly monitoring was organized at the locality.

- To understand the importance of preserving water, the college observed the World ocean day and World River Day in the bank of mighty Brahmaputra and its channel (Kolong river).

- The college has distributed 300 numbers of Areca nut along with local variety of Orange & Guava plants in the adopted village for plantation. - The college has observed the International Forest Day along with street play and documentary visualization to spread environmental awareness.

- To minimize the global impact of climate change, the college has organized a national seminar on “Reviving Traditional Practices in light of Climate Change”.

- The college regularly organizes plantation programme on different occasions.
