Established in 1992, the Department of Zoology of Kaliabor College under Gauhati University has a rich legacy in the field of biological sciences. It commenced its journey with Higher Secondary education and swiftly progressed to offer Undergraduate programs, pioneering Bachelor of Science courses in Zoology both as a general course and an Honours program under Gauhati University in 1995 and 1998 respectively.
Initially following a 2 + 1 pattern for the Undergraduate curriculum, the department transitioned to a 1 + 1 + 1 pattern (T.D.C) before embracing the semester system for a more comprehensive academic structure. With a commitment to excellence, the department continues to evolve, shaping the future of zoological studies and research.
The Department of Zoology of Kaliabor College under Gauhati University adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) semester system, enhancing the flexibility and depth of its academic offerings. This modern framework enabled students to tailor their educational journey according to their interests and career aspirations.
Continuing its dedication to academic advancement, the department implemented the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) as per the National Education Policy of 2020, under the auspices of Gauhati University. This modern framework enabled students to tailor their educational journey according to their interests and career aspirations.
1. Comprehensive Understanding: To provide with students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concept and methodologies across various branches of zoology.
2. Critical Thinking: To develop critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate biological phenomena, theories and experimental data within the realm of zoology.
3. Practical Skills: To develop practical skills through laboratory work, field studies and research project, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to world scenarios.
4. Interdisciplinary Knowledge: To promote interdisciplinary knowledge by integrating concepts from related fields such as ecology, genetics, physiology, evolution, computational biology etc. to address complex biological questions.
5. Research Proficiency: To skill students with research proficiency, including experimental design, data collection, statistical analysis and scientific communication to engage in independent research endeavors.
6. Ethical awareness: To promote ethical awareness and responsibility in the practice of zoology, emphasizing respect for animal welfare, biodiversity conservation and sustainability.
7. Communication Skill: To enhance communication skills both written and oral, to effectively convey scientific ideas, findings and conclusion to diverse audiences.
1. H.S. (10+2) in Biology
2. B.Sc. in Zoology (Honours - CBCS)
3. B.Sc. in Zoology (Regular - CBCS)
4. B.Sc. in Zoology (FGYUP)
PROGRAMME OUTCOME:
Students will acquire and pursue proficiency in good laboratory (both wet and dry) practices in biological sciences and will achieve the theoretical basis and practical skills of the tools/technologies commonly used in the field. Including all the fascinating specializations Taxonomy, Ecology, Parasitology, Toxicology, Fishery, Entomology, Bioinformatics etc. students will come to understand and evaluate the impact of new research discoveries in the life sciences and will be able to stimulate to think on wide range of careers, including biological and medical research in higher education institutions as well as careers in public and global health in environmental organizations, in food technology, pharmaceuticals and biotechnological industries.
PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOME:
• Students will develop proficiency in the quantitative skills necessary to analyze biological problems viz. statistical methods as applied to biology.
• Students will gain Knowledge of various biotechnology applications of plants and animals and will learn of industrially important natural products produced by them.
• Students will become familiar with scientific methodology, hypothesis generation and testing, design and execution of experiments.
• Students will develop the ability to think critically and to read and analyze scientific literature.
• Students will develop strong oral and written communication skills through effective presentation of experimental results through seminars.
